Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are made of two parts. The first part is a titanium post that is gently embedded into your jaw bone to act as a tooth root. Over time, the dental implant will fuse with the natural jaw bone. This helps to securely hold the implant in place. The second part is a dental crown that is fitted onto the implant and sits above the gum line. The dental crown is made from super durable and strong material. It is hand-crafted by expert technicians right here in Australia to look and function just like your real tooth.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are made from highly durable, long-lasting materials that are designed to function just like your natural teeth. If cared for correctly, your dental implants can last for over 25 years. The best way to care for your dental implants is to treat them exactly like your natural teeth. This means brushing and flossing twice daily, as well as regular six monthly check-up appointments with your dentist.

How long does a dental implant procedure take?

The surgery to place the titanium tooth root implant takes approximately 1 to 2 hours. Afterwards, a healing cap will be placed over the top of the implant while your jaw bone and gums heal, which generally takes around 3 to 6 months. Once fully healed, your permanent tooth implant will be fitted. This usually happens over two appointments, a few weeks apart. During the first appointment, we will check to see that your implant has fused with your jaw bone and take an impression of the implant. This will then be sent to a dental laboratory where a dental technician will handcraft your new implant tooth. At your second appointment, the implant tooth will be placed and your smile will be complete!

Do dental implants hurt?

We invest in the latest technology and use the gentlest techniques to ensure your tooth implant procedure is as quick and comfortable as possible. After your surgery to place your titanium tooth root implants, you may experience some mild pain and discomfort for up to 2 days. This can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication. It generally takes around 3 to 6 months for your jaw and gums to fully heal after surgery. Your recovery time will depend on your dental and medical history, the condition of your jaw bone and the number of implants placed.

Why should I replace missing teeth with dental implants?

Not only will replacing your missing teeth restore your smile and improve your quality of life, there are many other health benefits for getting dental implants. When you’re missing a tooth or teeth, your jaw bone will begin to recede. This jaw bone loss can negatively affect your facial appearance and make you look older as your cheeks and lips start to collapse inwards. Dental implants can prevent bone loss and help to support your facial structure. Similarly, your existing teeth may start to move into the gaps created by your missing teeth which can negatively affect your bite and put added stress on your teeth.

What affects the cost of dental implants in Australia?

There are a few factors that can affect the cost of dental implants in Australia, such as how many teeth you need to replace and whether you’ll need additional treatments to restore your smile. We’ll be able to give you a rundown of the costs involved for your dental implant treatment plan at your first consultation.

Who is eligible for dental implants?

While dental implants are suitable for most patients who are missing teeth, there are some situations where they will not work. If you have been missing teeth for a long period of time and have suffered too much bone loss, there may not be enough existing structure for a titanium implant to be placed.

When you come in for your consultation, we will take x-rays to assess your teeth, jaw bone and gums, and determine your suitability for dental implants. If dental implants aren’t suitable for you, we can help you find the best solution to restore your smile with our range of alternative treatments.
