Q&A

What is a tooth filling?

Dental fillings offer a safe, effective and discreet way to repair damage on the hard outer surface of the tooth, such as cavities, chips or cracks. Fillings form a protective shield against bacteria on the tooth to prevent further cavities and tooth decay that can damage the tooth root. At Great White Smiles, we use tough, tooth-coloured composite material for our fillings. This means your dental fillings will seamlessly blend in with your smile and function just like your natural teeth.

How long does a dental filling take?

Teeth filling appointments are usually quite quick and easy. This means your procedure should be over in under an hour and you’ll be ready to eat and drink again 30 minutes after that.

What happens during a dental filling procedure?

Before placing the filling, your dentist will remove any damaged parts of the tooth and clean off any plaque. The hole or cavity will then be filled with the composite filling material and smoothed over. Finally, a special UV light is used to quickly set and harden the filling.

Can you eat and drink after a tooth filling?

You can carry on with your day as normal after your tooth filling appointment. However, you must wait 30 minutes after your treatment to eat or drink. This allows enough time for the composite filling material to set and for any local anesthetic to wear off.

How long does a dental filling last?

With the right care, your composite fillings can last a long time — generally between 5 to 10 years. The best way to care for your dental fillings is to treat them the same as your natural teeth. This means brushing and flossing twice daily and making sure you come in for your regular six-monthly check up and clean visits at Great White Smiles!

Do tooth fillings hurt?

During your dental filling procedure, a local anaesthetic will be used to numb the affected tooth and surrounding area. This means you’ll barely feel a thing while we clear away any damaged parts of the tooth or plaque. After your procedure, you may experience some mild tooth pain or sensitivity. This can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication. If your tooth filling pain persists for more than a day or two after your appointment, please let us know so we can arrange a check-up.
